Happy New Year

Welcome to the 577th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research and open access articles from across the medical literature over the past seven days.

The highlights of this week's edition are randomised controlled trials on whether point-of-care ultrasonography improves the diagnostic accuracy of patients with undifferentiated hypotension in the Emergency Department & adjunctive granisetron therapy in patients with sepsis or septic shock; systematic reviews and meta analyses on transfusion thresholds for acute coronary syndromes & the efficacy and safety of prone positioning in COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure; and observational studies on mechanical ventilation in patients with cardiogenic pulmonary edema & electrocardiographic changes at the early stage of status epilepticus.

There are also guidelines on burn mass casualty incidents & topical application of anti-microbial agents for lower respiratory tract infection; narrative reviews on balancing the risks and benefits of anesthetics in status epilepticus & viscoelastic testing; commentaries on combatting medical misinformation & how to assess systemic venous congestion with point of care ultrasound; as well as correspondence on the host/organ unregulated response & if albumin really holds an unrealised physiological promise as a resuscitation fluid

If you only have time to read one review article this week, try this one on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for anaesthetists in thoracic trauma.
